Originally known as the "New Inn" the building was severely damaged by a bomb on the 7 November 1940.

Having thought that the building was damaged beyond repair, Michael Mirams tells me that it was operating under the name of the "Rorty Crankle" till its closure after 1994.

The name Rorty Crankle is actually Gaelic for Happy Corner.
