Stansted
This is a new one to me and the only reference I have about this is from a book featuring Edwardian images of Kent. The Stansted description says "... On the long, straight main street we see Mr Stevens' Rose and Crown public house. It's ales, wine and spirits are supplied by Younger's, one of the most celebrated London brewers..." Actually that information may be slightly incorrect. Paul Skelton. In The King's England (Kent) Arthur Mee describes Stansted as "standing
with smiling hills all around." However, as a supporter of the temperance
movement, Arthur Mee might not have exactly approved of the Rose & Crown, or
(standing outside in his shirtsleeves) its licensee, Cyril Stevens. The Rose
and Crown advertises itself as offering Allsopp's Burton Ales but whether
the pub was tied to this brewery, or operated as a free house, isn't yet
known. Next door to the Rose and Crown is the Stansted Bazaar. In the
Edwardian era, such emporia sold most of their goods (which included small
toys and packets of sweets) for just 1d (less than 1/2p!) So, local knowledge required here please. LICENSEE LIST STEPHENS Cyril 1904+
