Turk's Head deed 1790

Above deed, dated, 29 April 1790. Kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. This indenture, a Deed of Covenant, relates to the transfer of the "Turk's Head" from Henry Darm, yeoman of High Halden, to James Dannet, innkeeper of Cranbrook. The property consisted of "...the "Turk's Head", an oast house, a stable and other buildings, together with another messuage, or tenement and stable, adjoining in Milkhouse Street. The property abuts to a lane called Cobbler's Lane, leading from Milkhouse Street to Staplehurst towards the west..." Odd, as Staplehurst is to the north of Sissinghurst!

This premises has been identified in the 1881 census. However, the head of the house was only identified as a farm labourer, so I am not certain whether this was a pub or just a building with a name like a pub would have had.

Further research kindly done by Chris Richford suggests that the area of Golford is mainly populated by farms, and although the census records do show the hand-written entries saying Inn, they also say Farm and could well have been incorrectly added by the recorder as an Inn.
