From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 23 August, 1856.

WOOLWICH POLICE COURT. Monday.

John Harison, remanded on a charge of obtaining money, etc., by false pretences, was again placed at the bar.

John Ewens, landlord of the "Queen Victoria" beer shop, Eltham Green, deposed, the prisoner came to his house, and represented that he belonged to the Royal Sappers and Miners, and was sent by the commanding officer to procure lodgings for twenty men of the corps, for three months, as they were ordered to make a survey of the district. Witness believed what the prisoner said, as he was a very "fair spoken man," and on the faith of the prisoner’s statement, witness supplied him with a bed, a supper, and lent him three shillings.

Other evidence was produced, proving that the prisoner had committed similar frauds at other places, and the prisoner was fully committed for trial.
