Greenwich

Reference has been in made Pigots directory of 1823-24 to a pub called the "Black Jack and Shovel" situated in Church Street in 1823. John Watts being the licensee. Unfortunately this is the only information regarding this pub I have found to date.

Jacqueline Davies kindly writes to me who says she is interested in 17th century Greenwich and has been doing research from sources including a survey of East Greenwich Manor in a document titled "A survey of the Kings Lordship or Manor of East Greenwich in the County of Kent made by Samuel Travers 1695-97."

Her research has found the following information. "Black Jack and Shovel" held by Robert Shorters near Brook’s Marsh (Between Church Street and Deptford Creek?) – possibly called Black Boys ? but just a guess. Very unlikely to be "Sugar Loaf."
