Reference was given in the 1851 census to a house I believe was called the "Claygate Crop" although I may be mistaken. If anyone can decipher this writing differently please let me know.
It is suggested by Robyn Spooner that this actually should read "Claygate Cross," a hamlet in the Tonbridge area according to Wikipedia. I think the name of the “licenced victualler” is John Benge as you have noted. He is also on the 1841 census as a “grocer” at the same place.
The occupant, described as a Licensed Victualler, was a John Benge or Benje, again deciphering required, who was aged 45 in that year.
