A NIGHTCLUB dubbed the borough's number one trouble hotspot has had its license suspended for two months.
Jazzmin's, in Elmfield Road, Bromley, was handed the penalty by Bromley
council's licensing sub committee after the panel was shown footage of
'extreme' violent behaviour from customers at the venue.
As well as the suspension, if the club wants to reopen it will have to
meet a raft of new conditions, including installing a wide-reaching CCTV
system, banning customers from smoking outside and recording the
identity of every clubber as they come in.
Committee chairman, Councillor Tony Owen, said: "Jazzmins was the number
one trouble hotspot in Bromley.
"We were shown videos of particularly nasty things happening outside the
club, with people who were clearly drunk exchanging punches. Some nights
it must have bottled up every police officer in the borough."
Mr Owen said that the management at the club had every opportunity to
put their house in order before the review hearing on July 14, but had
failed to act.
In a dramatic eleventh hour twist, the company behind Jazzmins, Extrare
Ltd, announced that it was going into liquidation on the morning of the
hearing.
Although the future of the club is uncertain, council officials decided
to go ahead with the hearing in case the club is taken over by new
owners who want to re-open it.
The review was prompted by an application from Bromley police citing
nearly 50 violent incidents in the club between May 2008 and May 14 this
year, including a number of fights and violent attacks, usually by drunk
customers and sometimes by young people under 18-years-old.
According to PC Philip Spiteri from Bromley police an incident on
February 5 involved an underage drinker brawling outside the nightspot.
He said: "One male had been knocked unconscious and a female had been
punched to the floor.
"One of those arrested was 17, he had been drinking inside the premises
prior to the fight.
"The other two were 18 and 20 years of age. These two tried to fight
with officers when stopped by them."
Amongst other incidents CCTV footage mysteriously disappeared before
police could look at it, doormen were hostile to officers and one man
was bitten on the face on the dance floor.
Mr Owen added: "Two years ago Jazzmins was one of the least problematic
nightspots, but then it had an over 25s and smart dress only policy.
"The building just isn't suited to being a night club, it would be
better as a shop.
