Slough Fort 2019

Above photo 2019 showing the Slough fort.

This one appears to have been opened for the refreshment of the workmen building the Slough fort. The fort was opened in 1867 but evidently building work continued for a few years after.

The Dunn family appear to have lived in Allhallows for the whole of the 19th century. They were smallholders/farmers 8 acres. In census 1881 Frederick Dunn 40 years was lodging at the "Rose and Crown," along with others.

Chatham News - Saturday 27 August 1870.

Mr. Hayward said he opposed an application about to be made by Mr. John Dunn, landlord of the "Lobster," at Allhallows. He presented a memorial from a number of the inhabitants complaining of the manner in which the house had been conducted. It was open all day on Sundays; young men were encourage there at all hours; and from the house being in an isolated situation, the police had been unable to approach it so as to secure a conviction. The licence, he said, was only granted for the accommodation of the men during the erection of the fort.

Mr. Dunn said he had had the house 7 years, and had never had a complaint made against him, and men was still at work at the fort.

Adjourned till the 30th of September.
