PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest ????

Old Fox

???? (Name to)

80 Bellegrove Road / Dover Road

Welling

I have also seen this addressed as Belle Grove, East Wickham.

Not much information about this at present, but I am informed that it was once known as Foxbury House and changed to the "Coach and Horses." I also have reference to a "Fox and Hounds" but no address and don't know yet whether there is any connection.

Further information found tells me the following:-

During the mid-18th century William Palmer a Welling resident living on Old Dover Road, now Bellegrove Road, Welling, applied for a licence to sell alcohol from his own residence. After the licence was granted his house became known as the "Old Fox." In 1896 Palmer applied to the Council to build a new Hotel further up the road on the corner of Central Avenue, this was a year after the opening of the Bexleyheath Line and William Palmer saw this as a business opportunity.

Whitbread Brewery took over the "Old Fox" in Dover Road, and about the same time became financially involved in the opening of the "Station Hotel." During this transitional period, the "Old Fox" became the Bellegrove Labour Club and ultimately the "Bellegrove Social Club," as it is still known today.
