Coal was first brought up from the Betteshanger coal mine in 1927.

In the early 1930s their ground was leased by the new welfare organisation so that Football, Rugby and Cricket could be played by the new workforce at Betteshanger Colliery.

In 1936, the 12-acre ground was given as a Jubilee gift to the employees at Betteshanger Colliery provided they built the play areas and pavilions themselves; this included a new bowls green. This is probably when the club was also built.

The club has always been available to the local community as a social centre, at the moment (2022) they host a weekly morning breakfast club on a Tuesday with Darts, Pool and Bingo being regular users. The function room is hired out most week-ends.

The Welfare Scheme also has an Allotment Section (Hillside House Allotment & Gardening Association), Sea Fishing (Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Sea Angling Club), Fresh Water Fishing (Betteshanger C Park Angling Society) and a Pigeon Club.

In March 2019, the Bar became a Private Limited Company by guarantee, a requirement for all charities who have a bar on their premises. The company is known as Betteshanger Trading Arm and is at the forefront of all of their functions.
