It is said that the word Strand refers to an Old English word meaning bank or shore. The buildings on the other side of the street were made after the river Stour at this point dried up and retreated. This area can be traced back to Saxon times about 400 AD.

The Weavers building that can be dated back to the 13th century was actually named after the Dutch migrants who settled here in the 16th century, and at that time the building was partly used as the "Bull Inn" and at the time the merchants, sailors and other towns people who frequented the building would have been able to watch the ships in the river.
