Originally known as the "Maidstone Arms" and then the "Railway Hotel," the building was destroyed in January 1944 when it was hit by a German Junkers 88 bomber that was shot down and crashed in the area, causing a major explosion.

The pub was rebuilt in 1955 and called the "Hop Pocket" being situated in Hop Pocket Lane. However, some time after 1993 it was deemed necessary to change the name to simply the "Hop Inn."
