Rood Lane Greenwich
Jacqueline Davies kindly writes to me who says she is interested in 17th century Greenwich and has been doing research from sources including a survey of East Greenwich Manor in a document titled "A survey of the Kings Lordship or Manor of East Greenwich in the County of Kent made by Samuel Travers 1695-97." She kindly sends me the following information:- Lamperne Dogger held by John Aleworth (previously Blundell’s, then Wootons) – 72 references Rood Lane. Some rough translation as the Lighted Dog in Danish?
This one sounds like a pub with that Danish name, but the previous and after names suggest to me that it wasn’t a pub of that era, the names are more likely to be of trades-people as the pubs of that time would probably have said "Blundell’s Lamperne Dogger" and "Wootons Lampern Dogger" if it was a pub. Although that sort of name is exactly what tends to happen to the traditionally named pubs of today, but they never stay with those kinds of names long. However, that doesn’t mean to say it wasn’t a pub when it had the name Lampern Dogger. I’ll add it to my list and hope that further information comes to light on this one.
Jacqueline Davies goes on to say:- "I have looked through the references to Cock Yard and see no inn/tavern nor anything that sound pubbish. Cock Yard, Hunt's Alley and White Horse Alley were all around Fisher Lane. Too small to be named on the 1690s survey but if names sequential then they are all together.
