Norlands Hotel 1932

Above postcard, circa 1932, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. This aerial photograph shows the front, north-facing, elevation of Hortel. In the park opposite it there is a life-size statue of Sir Barnes Wallis, inventor of the bouncing bomb, which was tested on the coastal waters between Herne Bay and Reculver.

I believe this was a private hotel, so you would have to be a resident or guest to access alcoholic beverages from this establishment.

I do not yet know where it was situated or indeed closed.

Local knowledge required please.

The Hotel was located at 15-16, Beacon Hill. At present I don't know when it ceased trading but the building now houses apartments.

Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, Saturday 11 April 1931.

Mr. A. K. Mowll applied for confirmation of an "on" licence granted by the Justices of St. Augustine's division in respect of the "Norlands Hotel," Herne Bay. He said there was no opposition and the conditions as to there being no bar, etc., were agreed.

The licence was confirmed.
