Maidstone's Source Bar to hold special event in memory of stab victim Andre Bent.
He died after a disturbance broke out following a performance by rapper MoStack at
"Gallery" nightclub.
Mr Humphrey and his girlfriend Sophie Claire are behind the event raising
money for Andre Bent's family.
A special club event is being planned to raise money to cover Maidstone
stabbing victim Andre Bent's funeral costs.
All proceeds from ticket sales and profits from behind the bar will go to
the student's family or an anti-knife crime charity of their choice.
Mr Bent, from Lambeth in London, died after suffering a fatal stab wound in
Maidstone High Street in the early hours of Sunday (August 25).
He died after a disturbance broke out following a performance by rapper
MoStack at "Gallery" Nightclub in Bank Street.
DJ Ben Humphrey, who goes by the name Ben.Ny, has used his connections in
the music industry to plan an event in the student's memory.
"I work in south east London every day and travel up from Kent," he said.
"You see things on the news but don't think that this sort of thing actually
affects you.
"What happened in Maidstone last weekend really opened mine and my other
half's eyes.
"We go out in the town quite a lot and it could have happened to anyone of
us or our friends or family.
"We haven't taken this lightly as a community and want to raise awareness
against this sort of thing. If we make one person put down a knife then we
may have saved a life and that's a success.
As a community, we want to show our sympathies to Andre's family.
"I'm hoping we can raise enough to cover the costs of his funeral and give
him the send off he deserves.
"In Maidstone, we do not tolerate this and we are going to put two fingers
up to knife crime.
"He will get justice but we need to prevent anything like this from
happening again."
Mr Humphrey has three younger brothers who will all turn 18 over the next
few years.
He said he doesn't want to live in fear that one "might not come home after
a night out".
The event at Source will be called Choose Lives, Not Knives and will have a
dedicated page in due course.
If successful, there are plans to launch a charity of the same name.
Mr Humphrey and his girlfriend Sophie Claire are behind the event with
Richie Carrera, Liam Jelly, Martin Astin, Matt Shipley and Source owners
Steve and Rachel Moore.
Two rooms will be playing house music while the other will feature urban
music with a line-up of 20-25 DJs planned to play sets.
"We have been inundated with people who want to help out," Mr Humphrey
continued. "The last 24 hours have been mental - it has picked up like
crazy.
"I have been in touch with the council and some people in the industry about
possibly doing a festival next year. Big names have already said they will
support it. We're not going to stop with just one event."
Maidstone will see an increased police presence this weekend in the wake of
Andre Bent's death.
It will take place at Source Bar in Rose Yard, Maidstone, from 1pm until 8pm
on Sunday, September 8.
Tickets will cost £5 and it will be for over 18s only.
