Rose watercolour 1750

Above watercolour by Francis Grose of the Northgate from the Borough. He was posted to Canterbury in 1750 and painted watercolours of Canterbury scenes. I am assuming this was called the Rose by the sign.

Rose location 2014

Rose location 2020

Above Google image, December 2020, showing the rough location of the Rose.

Situated in the Northgate area and I believe perhaps near to St. Mary's Church. The actual gate was removed in 1830, and the church deconsecrated in 1912 and is now part of the King's school.
