Thomas Baily built four cottages on the corner between the High Street and Lower Green in 1855. These four cottages were bought in 1870 by Bartum and Co., brewers of Tonbridge. Later in the same year the cottage nearest Lower Green was extended by a wing of similar design and with the adjacent cottage became a public house, I believe the premises was originally known as the "Baily Arms" named after the builder, but later became known as the "Fleur de Lys."

Kentish Gazette, 8 March, 1870.

Embezzlement at Leigh.

William Jackson, 47, clerk, was indicted for obtaining by false pretences the turn of 12s. 6d. from Mrs. Martin, at Leigh, near Tunbridge, on the 3rd of February.

Mr. E. T. Smith prosecuted.

Prisoner went to Mrs. Martin, wife of the landlord of the “Baily Arms,” Leigh, and by means of certain representations, which afterwards were proved to be false, he succeeded in obtaining from her 12s. 6d.

Prisoner, in an able defence said he had been in business as a merchant at Manchester, had served on grand and petty juries, and had a cousin a Member of Parliament, he also denied that he borrowed the money under false pretences, but intended to have repaid it had he not been arrested too soon.

Mr. Biron said there were two other charges against the prisoner, but he did not intend to offer any evidence.

Superintendent Dance said he had five similar charges against the prisoner, all of recent date.

The jury found prisoner “guilty,” and he was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour.
