Wolfe and Castle: We visited Rochester’s new micropub and had a very cosy stay.
The relaxed and homely vibe plus the cosy setting make this a must
while on a visit to Rochester.
If there is one thing that we as a nation can boast about, it’s our
pubs. Even just in terms of sheer volume, you can’t turn a corner in
the UK without finding another pub or bar.
One place in particular that’s always been a popular spot for a
cheeky drink or two is Rochester, with the main High Street littered
with plenty of excellent pubs that are well worth a visit. In fact,
this very street has just welcomed a new addition in the form of
Wolfe and Castle, a micropub that opened in March specialising in
craft beers.
Rochester is well known for its historic streets, grand cathedral
and stunning castle, making it a popular spot all year round and a
great place to set up a pub. With the news of this new opening, I
was more than eager to pay the spot a visit as a local Medway
resident who journeys to Rochester often.
With more varieties of beer than you can possibly imagine, you're
sure to find something that meets your tastes here.
Well, the first thing to note is the somewhat unusual exterior to
the pub which makes it immediately noticeable and gives the place
plenty of character. This micropub sits in a Grade II listed
building, named as such due to the fact that it leans to one side.
Inside was certainly cosy, with this being a micropub it has a very
intimate interior, and an almost homely décor which really gave it a
certain charm. Given that I went on a particularly busy day during
the weekend, there wasn’t any seating left but I was expecting this
to be the case and found myself a little spot to lean, which kept me
happy.
The staff were all incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable of
their craft (pun not intended). It really was a very relaxed and
enjoyable environment to settle into.
Inside are several fridges full to the brim of colourful bottles and
cans to take your pick of. From sour beers that taste like carrot
cake to IPAs in an array of flavours, there’s certain to be
something that meets your tastes on offer.
I went for a half-pint of On & On, one of the popular crafts that
they had on draught when I visited. It was deliciously smooth and
citrusy, perfect for the nicer turn in weather that we’ve been
experiencing recently.
The variety on offer really was quite astounding, and I'm sure craft
beer lovers will absolute be delighted at the chance to experiment
with some an array of new tastes and flavours. As someone who really
doesn't know much about beers and ales, deciding to go with the
popular choice was definitely a good move and I was left more than
satisfied.
Even in a relatively short amount of time since opening, the pub
clearly has gained quite a name for itself as there was a very
steady flow of customers the entire time that I was there. This
rotation of people kept the pub alive with the sounds of
conversation and laughter, a fantastic atmosphere to be a part of
for sure. |
