According to research by a William Baxter, in the Back Alley (the area where Allders and Payne’s the Jewellers were till 2013) there was, "a wretched and notorious little beer-house that stood at the south end amongst other hovels. Its sign was a Negro doll that dangled from a pole over its doorway."

Nothing else was added to this and that's all the information I have so far found.
