A Deed dated 1845 stated that the premises belonged to William Ayling and was referred to as the "Bull."

 

" however J Costin's name appeared in the Rate Books of 1831 when it was called the "Bull's Head."

 

Another Deed dated 1841 gave an address of 26 High Street and which would have included Skilton’s (the butcher from 1905-1960), Aylings Shoe Shop and later Mac Fisheries and Caters Supermarkets. All these shops have disappeared and the majority of the building has been taken over by the TSB. (See also The Queen’s Head).
Situated at 25 High Street this beer-house belonged to William Ayling who died in 1923 and who also owned the shop known later as Aylings Shoe Shop and situated on the same site.
William Baxter stated that there was another pub on the north side of the Market Place called The Bull Inn (1743). According to Library Archives, a house and grounds belonging to someone called Staples (probably related to the Staples of Bromley Common who were Victuallers) sold it to a Mr N Peters and S Ball in 1763.

According to the directories of 1869-76 The Butcher’s Arms would have been situated by the side of a footpath leading past the Cottage Hospital - this may have been known as Pieter’s Lane in those days but the district was also known as South Side or South
