Originally built as a ferry building in 1662 and used to shelter people waiting to be ferried across the river before the bridge was built, the old Ferry House also doubled as a beer house.

A new bridge being built in 1902. Before this the original "Dog and Duck" was the other side of the road. Although the original Ferry House building is still their the O.S. map of 1896 shows the building to be also the first "Dog and Duck" building, and was known as the "Ferry House Beer House" in that year. Changing name by 1902.
