From the Kent Herald, 21 March 1833.

On Thursday afternoon an inquest was held before Mr. Carttar, coroner for Kent, and a highly respectable Jury, at the "Royal Artillery Canteen," Woolwich on view of the body of Major-General Robert Evans. Brown Willis, Captain in the Royal Artillery, deposed as follows:— Yesterday morning, about ten o’clock, upon my entering the Library, I discovered the deceased lying on the floor, apparently in a fit. I assisted him up, and put him into a chair; he groaned two or three times, and then died; every assistance was rendered, and a medical man sent for, but he died before the surgeon arrived.

Dr. Wm. Harris, of the Royal Artillery, said that he was sent for to attend the deceased and found him quite dead, he had examined the body, and was of opinion that this death proceeded from congestion of blood upon the brain.

Verdict:- "Died by the visitation of God."

The unfortunate gentleman was seen to enter the Library a few minutes before ten o'clock, seaming in unusually good health.
