Woods Gate
Pembury
This was a coaching inn traced back to 1560. Old coaching
schedules show a stop at the "Royal Oak Inn," Pembury.
"Roads measurable from G.P.O. London – The "Royal Oak Inn" at Woods Gate,
Pembury, distance 36 miles from London."
Ogilby’s 1675 road map shows the Coppingcrouch Green milestone 35 miles from
London Bridge.
"Royal Oak" at Woodsgate closed at about 1850 and I believe became the "Woodsgate."

From the Maidstone Journal, 1 April 1806.
On Friday, the 21st. James Harris, landlord of the "Royal Oak," at Woodsgate, in
the parish of Tonbridge, was fined by the Right Hon. Lord Viscount Boyne, one of
the Magistrates for the county of Kent, in the sum of three Guinness and all
expenses; as also William Martin, constable of Speldhurst, in the sum of 10
shillings and all expenses; the former for refusing to find diet and beer for a
party of the Northumberland regiment quartered upon him; and the latter for
abusive behaviour to some soldiers of the said corpse in their quarters.

From the Kent Herald, 8 November 1827 Pembury.bmp"
On Sunday evening, the 28th ult. an elderly Scotchman, named James Taylor, died
at the house of Mr. Pawley, "Royal Oak Inn," Woodgate, after a few days illness.
The deceased had for many years travelled in the counties of Kent and Sussex, as
a licensed peddler, and has been understood to say previous to the last journey,
that he had a considerable sum of money out at use, which, with the circumstance
of his refusing to be undressed during his illness, led to a private inquiry by
several respectable persons in the neighbourhood respecting his family and
affairs, but he declined giving any information on the subject, except that his
friends were living in Scotland. After his death 3s. 8 1/2d, only was found in
his pockets. We understand he expressed a great wish to be removed to Goudhurst,
where he was also well-known, and which place he usually called his home. Mr.
Pawley humanely offered to convey him thither in a post chaise, but his removal
was then considered inexpedient - suffice it to say he was buried in the parish,
in Pembury church yard.
