The Sandgate Hotel in Folkestone announces sudden closure.

A popular seafront hotel has announced its closure with "immediate effect".

The owners of Sandgate Hotel in Folkestone have confirmed the venue will cease trading, but mystery still surrounds the reasons why.

In a Facebook post last night, hotel staff thanked the community for its support and custom over recent months.

It reads: "The owners of The Sandgate Hotel have tonight decided that the hotel is is to cease trading with immediate effect.

"Dean, Dave, Jade, Nigel and the rest of the team would like to thank each and everyone of you for your support and custom over the last few months."

Jade, a team member, commented on the post via the Sandgate Hotel's Facebook page.

She wrote: "It is with much regret that I speak on here rather than in person but that decision was clearly taken out of my hands.

The hotel, which sits in Wellington Place along Sandgate Esplanade, has been loved by many, and several former visitors to the hotel have expressed their sadness over its closure.

"We had a hell of a lot left to give and some exciting plans for the future. Some people’s morals leave a lot to be desired."

Nigel Langdale, who also worked at the hotel in the kitchen, wrote a tribute to his colleagues on the post.

"The best management team I've ever worked with and I'll be forever grateful to Dean and Dave for giving me the opportunity to reignite my passion for cooking," he wrote.

"I've enjoyed it so much. We've had such great feedback from the food we've sent out, especially my scotch eggs and the Sunday roasts, along with the great atmosphere in the bar.

"Such a shame that the owner has decided to close the place with immediate effect and get rid of all the staff and current team.

"The good news is that the owner has said that they 'may call me when things pick up again and ask me to come back to me work for them'.

"Let me think about it for a second... Errr no thanks."

The hotel, which sits in Wellington Place along Sandgate Esplanade, has been loved by many, and several former visitors to the hotel have expressed their sadness over its closure.

Steve Parish wrote: "The future was bright for all with a bit of patience! Who could of predicted a flood that changed the timeline of progress."

Jane Winsor also expressed her upset over the hotel's shock closure.

She wrote: "Nooo!! You have all given the place new life. We were so excited for the reopening and have been regularly ever since.

"The location is second to none - what a dreadful shame. Hope you can all find work"

The hotel has been contacted directly for comment.

This is now again open (2024). Although the WhatPub web updated 7 Feb 2025 say it's closed. Local knowledge required please.

The Sandgate hotel which Gordon Ramsay branded ‘real-life Fawlty Towers’ goes on market.

A hotel that once featured on Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares has gone on the market for £1.35 million.

It shut down suddenly in 2022, with little indication as to why.

One of the venue’s restaurants reopened under the name Lido Bon Vino in 2023, but closed just a year later.

In 2007, it featured on Kitchen Nightmares, where Ramsey described it as a “real-life Fawlty Towers” before helping then-owners Lois and Peter Hamilton-Slade turn the tide.

The 14-room venue had a complicated menu, a lack of leadership and staff were helping themselves to booze behind the bar.

Now, it has been put up for sale with estate agent Open House.

The listing states: “Nestled along the picturesque Sandgate Esplanade in Folkestone, this remarkable commercial property offers an exceptional opportunity for investors and entrepreneurs alike.

“Spanning an impressive 7,010 sq ft, the building boasts a generous layout featuring three spacious reception rooms, perfect for welcoming clients or hosting events.”

The estate agents suggest that the site could be converted into a care home, or refurbished as a boutique hotel or a large guesthouse.

They call the location “unbeatable”, adding: “The vibrant community of Sandgate offers a charming atmosphere, with shops, cafes and recreational activities just a stone's throw away.

“This property presents a rare chance to acquire a substantial asset in a sought-after area.

“With its prime location and extensive facilities, it is sure to attract significant interest.

“Do not miss out on this unique opportunity to make your mark in the thriving Folkestone market. Act quickly to secure your future in this exceptional property.”

In the early 2000s, the hotel’s restaurant La Terrasse held a Michelin Star before the chef moved back to France.

When it shut down with immediate effect in 2022, staff complained of unpaid wages and were shocked by the sudden news.

One employee, a Ms Hopkins, was awarded £1,342.80 in unpaid wages, £517.49 in damages and £260.36 in holiday pay following an employment tribunal.

The company was dissolved in 2024.
