Standing opposite the Tate and Lyle sugar refinery, the Tate Institute was financed by Henry Tate in 1887 to serve as a community centre ‘for the benefit of the industrial classes of Silvertown and its neighbourhood’. Serving as a library and air raid post during WW2, the Institute was renamed the Tate and Lyle (London) Sports and Social Club in 1953 by Tate and Lyle to provide recreational facilities for their staff.
