Only one instance of this found at present, and by account of the paper, it seems that this rather harsh oversight in my opinion proved to be the end of this beer shop.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 20 June 1863. Greenwich Police 2.bmp"

Mince Meat at Christmas.

Mr. Goldsmith, landlord of the "Bell" beer shop, Lewisham, was summoned by the Excise, for having in his house half a pint of brandy, whereby he was liable to a penalty of £50. The defendants wife told the officer, who searched the house, that it was the remains of what they put in the mince meat at Christmas. Mr. Maude fined the defendant in the mitigated penalty of £12 10s., and told him he had forfeited his license.

William Austin of Sydenham, was also summoned for having in his bar parlour five pints of rum. The defendant pleaded guilty, and was also fined £12 10s.

Mr. Massey, solicitor, appeared for the defendants, and made a very able defence, on their behalf.
