King's Highway Deal
Document KAO U.725 M7 mentions the following:- 1674 - 1 messuage called the "Bear Pump" and 12 perches of land Geoffrey Safrey by will to his daughter Mary Brown. The same document 1744:- Sarah Gilbert holds 1 messuage and yard purchased from Richard Maundy who purchased from Mary Brown. From the deeds of the "Black Horse," although I am not yet sure where the connection lays:- 1757 - Sarah Friend mortgages (inter alia) "The Bear Pump" to Thomas Rammell of Eastry yeoman, with the kitchen, outhouse, brewhouse, yard, garden, grass platts, land and ground in Lower Deal within the liberty of the town and borough of Deal in or near the Lower Street near the Chapel abutting to the King's highway there East and South and to the lands belonging to the heirs of Peter Bridger north and west. Document KAO U.725 M7 goes on to say:- 1759 - (A retrospective entry in the manorial roll of the manor of Chamberlain's Fee) Sarah Gilbert died seized of 1 messuage and yard formerly the estate of Mary Brown called "The Bear Pump" and the premises descended to her daughter Sarah Friend widow.
