A J Langridge's research in 1977 mentions a "Black Dog" or "Black Dogg" in Deal or Walmer circa 1680 when the signs were paid for.

In 1719 it appears in a local Vestry Meeting book that the premises was bought for the use of the poor and the adjoining messuage, tenement land and stable be sold and all monies be used to purchase the main building.

The building pops up again in the Kentish Post of 15 October 1727 when "Daffy's Elixir" was being sold at Mr. Samuel Simmons, a baker, over against the "Black Dog" at Deal.

Later referred to as simply the "Dogg" from "St, Leonard's Records" and mentions a John Hodgeman in 1751.

Local historian Les Cozens suggests the premises was located on the beach and at one point was used as a Military Hospital for sailors with infection diseases.
