Dane John Brewery 1900

The above photograph shows the Dane John Brewery, circa 1900, run by Ash & Co.

The Dane John brewery stood at the corner of Watling Street and Marlow Avenue, and started production in about 1770. The premises extended along the east side of Marlow Avenue until its demolition in the 1930s and after first becoming a car park, it was later redeveloped as part of the Whitefriars project.

Former Jane John Brewery 2009

I believe the above image taken from Google, July 2009, shows more or less the same shot today.

In this building the famous Canterbury Ales, Stout and Porter were brewed.

Ash Brewery workers

Workers at Ash and Co's Dane John Brewery in Canterbury pose for the photograph, probably sometime in the 1930s.

But does any Extra reader recognise any of the men, all but three of them wearing the compulsory hat - cap, trilby or bowler.

The card has been loaned to us by Canterbury postcard collector and dealer Derek Butler, who would like confirmation that this is Ash and Co's brewery in St. John Lane.
