Above sign left circa 1950s, kindly sent by Robert Greenham who says:- This
Sign was hanging high up at Whitbread's Beltring Hop Farm (and which, I
was told, was subsequently bought by an American). |
The above sign, wasn't actually designed and released by Whitbread, but has
been designed by Robert Greenham in the same style as the card sets they
distributed as a representation of what the sign looked like. Robert
says:- This was based on the image which appeared on Whitbread's metal
map for East Kent which was painted by D. W. Burley in 1950, on
commission from Whitbread.
Robert does say he's not totally sure the sign on the left was
actually used at all on the building. |
The above metal map, kindly sent by Robert Greenham was released, in
1950 and painted by D. W. Burley, and was titled Inn-Signia of Whitbread
Houses in East Kent, Whitbread & Co Ltd. The Inn Signs designed by:- M.
C. Balston, Vena Chalker, Kathleen M Claxton, K. M. Doyle, Ralph Ellis,
Marjorie Hutton, Harvey James, Prudence Rae-Martin, Violet Rutter, L.
Toynbee and Kit Watson. |

Folkestone, Hythe, Sandgate & Cheriton Herald, Saturday 20 June 1914.
Saturday's storm. Houses struck by lightning. Animals killed.
Early on Saturday morning a remarkable thunderstorm passed over Hythe.
At the Dentals, the residence of Mrs. J. F. Shelford, in North Road, the
lightning struck a chimney stack at the west side of the house, making a
big hole in the stack itself and tearing up a large number of tiles on
the roof surrounding it. An immense crack was created extending down the
stack the stack into the servants' room below, where, luckily, no
further damage was done, except that the paper was scorched. The
occupants of the room were naturally match alarmed for the time being.
Mr. J. T. Clarke, of Botolph's Bridge Farm, lost two horses; one was
killed by lightning, while the other evidently ran into a pond in its
fright and was drowned. Mr. P. J. Uden, of the "Carpenter's Arms," lost
a sheep and three lambs, and one or two other farmers around West Hythe
also suffered in this way.
At Pedlinge a large tree was stripped of its bark by lightning.

My Great Great Grandfather was Charles Stickels/Stickells, he was
living at the "Carpenter's Arm" in the 1851 Census. Charles was a
Shepherd and Innkeeper living with him was his wife Elizabeth, daughter
Harriet and son Charles (my great grand-father). By 1861 I believe they
