Drink driver parking bay

Reserved: These special parking bays are all part of a new drink-drive campaign.

PARKING bays are appearing in some unlikely locations across Dover in a bid to deter drink drivers.

The special spaces, which are marked as reserved for drink drivers, are part of a Kent Highway Services campaign that highlights the danger that drunken drivers pose to pedestrians.

Highway Services road safety operations manager Steve Horton said: "By placing the parking spaces in pedestrian areas and next to immovable objects like trees we can show how a drink-driver can be a danger to pedestrians away from the road and to himself.

"If a drink-driver was to crash into a tree or a lamppost, the forces involved would result in death or serious injury. It's not worth the risk for even one drink."

Almost 300 drivers are injured as the result of drink driving in Kent every year, but police catch many drivers each year and officers are specially trained to spot the tricks that drivers use to avoid getting caught.
