Concordans

Sevenoaks?

Concordans sign 1993

Above sign September 1993.

The above sign has kindly been sent to me from Brian Curtis who says it was taken in September 1983 and said to have been hanging outside a pub in the Sevenoaks area. However, at present I have no information about this.

I have finally out that the Concordans sign was actually hung outside the "Chequers" pub on the High Street in Sevenoaks. I believe it was a double-sided sign with the reverse using the English word "Chequers."

Concordans is actually a Dutch word meaning a translation table that provides you with a numbering system for counting. As the original use of a chequer board or checker board in English was as a means of counting money (hence the Chancellor of the Exchequer) – this makes perfect sense.
