Finest Hour Sign

Above, shows what was reported to be the new sign for the pub.

Sarah Webb

Landlady Sarah Webb being presented with RAMC and RAF plaques by Alan Taylor.

Originally called the "Sir John Falstaff" there has been a pub on this site since the 1860's although this is not the original pub, as in 1867 a widening of the narrow street saw the demolition and rebuilding of the pub as we know it today.

The pub still has its tiles frontage and is said to be one of the finest examples of this style in England.

On 10th May 2007, the "Sir John Falstaff" was reputed to be renamed the Finest Hour, a name suggested by Maggie Stephenson-Knight, and the pub was going to be furnished with war-time memorabilia.

A new sign was reported to have been designed, as shown above, but to date (1st Nov 2007) has not been seen hanging in place of the old one, or the name Finest Hour been seen on the pub itself.

I am led to believe that the pub has closed due to structural problems!!!

Well, whether those structural problems were ever real, the pub is now open again but still under the name of the "Sir John Falstaff." Sarah Webb seems to have been replaced by another licensee.
