This is not to be confused with the "Fountain" that later became the "Royal Hotel."

This house was north of it, and was on the seaward side of beach Street across from Oak Street which continued as a lane to the sea. It was leased in 1661 as the "Fountain" to John Burrowes citizen and cloth-worker of London. It changed name to the "Prince of Orange" in 1674 and leased to Morgan Lodge of Deal, chirurgeon (13th century name for surgeon). In 1719 being renamed the "Fleece" and leased to James Godden, butcher till 1789, then becoming the "Pelican" with Thomas Oakley, till 1839 when the deeds end.

Deal Borough Records show the following entry:- MS Council's Opinion 18th November 1776 - by Geo. Rowe, Inner Temple.

In the town and Borough of Deal are 30 Publick Houses including taverns and Inns, 18 whereof have stabling fit for the accommodation of Dragoons and horses and the other 12 have no stabling at all.

These dragoons (12 or 13 in all) were to assist the Officers of the Revenue at Deal.

The  following houses refused to billet the Dragoons for lack of suitable accommodation.

The Fountain was mentioned in this list.
