The Frog and Orange pub near Canterbury to go under the hammer.

A village pub "which may be suitable for redevelopment" will go under the hammer at auction next month.

The "Frog and Orange" at Shatterling near Canterbury, formerly known as the "Green Man," is being sold by its owners who have decided to leave the trade.

The Frog and Orange at Shatterling is being sold at auction.

Posting on the pub's Facebook page, they say: "The sign has gone up and we can now make it official that we are indeed selling up.

"We will be sad to say goodbye, but this move is filled with lots of happy memories and some lifetime friends who have become family forever.

"We made this decision last year to make this choice for a number of reasons, but mainly because we've enjoyed the freedom of having family time - even in a lockdown.

"We'd love to take this opportunity to say thank you all, to all of you for the support you have given us over the 14 years we have been here. You've also helped raise over £15,000 for different charities over the years from Frogfest's and charity days we have held for people."

The pub, which sits on a 1.11 acre site, is being auctioned on Feb 10 with a guide price of between £450,000 and £500,000.

Frog and Orange land 2020

The Frog and Orange at Shatterling sits on a big site which could be redeveloped.

Auctioneers Clive Emson says it may be suitable for a scheme for residential development, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.

There is a u-shaped bar area, seating area commercial kitchen, utility area and toilets on the ground floor.

On the first floor are two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and two bedrooms with en-suites to be finished.

The site also accommodates a second building, known as the Old Barn, which has two bedroom living accommodation.

(So, looks to me like another one going to be converted into houses. That'll be another village without anywhere local to go for entertainment. Paul Skelton.)

Pub up for auction - with possibility of development.

Frog and Orange 2020

A WELL known pub and restaurant a stone’s throw away from Wingham Wildlife Park is set to go under the hammer - and its current landlords have bid an emotional farewell to their loyal punters.

The former Frog and Orange in Shattering, on the outskirts of the Dover district, is in a rural location and auctioneers say the site could be "ripe for development"

The lot will be included at Clive Emson’s next online auction held between February 8 and 10.

Auction appraiser Jon Rimmer said: "This is an extensive property with six bedrooms, including those in the old barn next to it. It is surrounded by gardens and sits on a plot of 1.11 acres (0.44 hectares).

"There might the possibility to develop it as long as all necessaryconsents are obtainable.

"We anticipate interest from bidders who will have a variety of plans.” The owners of the pub shared a message on Saturday announcing the sale and explaining their reasoning: "So let's put the rumours to rest! The sign has gone up and we can now make it official - we are indeed selling up.

"We will be sad to say goodbye, but this move is filled with lots of happy memories and some lifetime friends who have become family forever.

"We made this decision last year for a number of reasons, but mainly because we’ve enjoyed the freedom of having family time - even in a lockdown.

“We'd love to take this opportunity to say thank you all, to all of you for the support you have given us over the 14 years we have been here. You've also helped raise over £15,000 for different charities over the years from Frogfests and charity days we have held.

"We aren't going far, for now, so I'm sure we will see you all soon in other pubs soon (hopefully).

“Remember, when you are able, to all support your locals when you can - your landlords and landladies work harder and longer hours than you realise.”

Plans to turn popular country pub between Canterbury and Dover into two homes.

The Frog and Orange in Shatterling closed in 2021.

Plans have been submitted to Dover Council to turn a former country pub between Canterbury and Sandwich into houses. The Frog and Orange closed at the start of 2021 and sold at auction soon after for a little more than £450,000.

The property was listed by auctioneer Clive Emson who described the property as “suitable for a scheme for residential development”. Now councillors have been handed plans that reveal the Shatterling bar and restaurant could be converted into homes.

Two properties have been proposed at the site on a country lane between the villages of Wingham and Ash and will see the existing buildings converted into homes with a kitchen, dining room, living room, study, utility room, and downstairs toilet. The former pub building will become a five-bedroom property, while the cottage will have four rooms.

The developer said: “The new build extension elements have been designed to reflect the character of the existing buildings through the use of matching painted brickwork, coupled with vertical profiled metal cladding to reflect the local vernacular”. They continued they feel this would enhance the appearance of the building and keep its traditional rural characteristics.

The plans detail a four and five-bedroom house at the site.

Work will include the demolition of an existing garage and an extension to the old barn. There will be a garage and two parking spaces for each property, as well as room for visitors.

In a post to punters on Facebook in January 2021 the pub said: “The sign has gone up and we can now make it official that we are indeed selling up. We will be sad to say goodbye, but this move is filled with lots of happy memories and some lifetime friends who have become family forever.”

The post continued: “We made this decision last year to make this choice for a number of reasons, but mainly because we’ve enjoyed the freedom of having family time - even in a lockdown! If we had known that the last Frogfest in 2018 was going to be the last, I’d have made it a two-dayer.
