TA 104/1-29 *23.

Leased in 1661 to Nicholas Whetstone as the "Greyhound". Lease continues until 1851, but from 1755 the premises were divided into three and later leased separately. The Middle Street "Greyhound" was there from 1878 to 1918, possibly later, and had followed the "Seven Stars."

Ned Taylor tells me the following:- Nicolas Whetstone, the original licensee was also the Post Master. King Street was known as Whetstone Street. He ran the post office allegedly from the Street, but given that the "Greyhound" was on Lower Street, now High Street, perhaps the "Greyhound" was on the street corner. Skinner's, on the corner of King Street and High Street, was once the town hall (1703) but may have been vacated and used as the "Greyhound?" 1804 is the date for the new Town Hall.
