The 1871 census mentions a Grocer's Arms in Lyminge, which was predominantly a grocer's, baker's, draper's and a beer seller. The occupier was mentioned as being Alfred Vincent, occupation in 1881, as dairyman. He marries Ellen Cleveland on 10 April, 1864.

The census also mentions Lillia Vincent, born about 1867 in Hythe (Kent), census 1871 at The Grocers Arms, The Street, Lyminge (Kent), census 1881 at 15 Alexandra Street, Folkestone (Kent), census 1891 North Elham (Kent), companion to Charlotte Rootes a Widow. There was a Silas Rootes identified as licensee of the New Inn, just down the road at Etchinghill in 1882.

Latterly known as Well House, was the village shop in 1840, and by 1870 had also become a grocer, bakery and also beershop with the apt name of the "Grocer's Arms."
