Above 1916 photo, kindly sent to me by Viv Haig, who says she believes the elder lady in the front row is licensee Mrs. Fanny Spicer. The gentleman back left being her Great Grandfather Mr. Haig.

Deal Licensing Register on 8 September 1864 mentions this pub and then again in the 1865 Almanac showing Coleman as licensee. Although I have just found reference to it circa 1855 from a list of former pubs in Deal and Walmer kept at Deal library.

Pikes listed it in 1908 as the "Locomotive Inn" 104 West Street. Later information gives it as 106.

From the Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, 3 April 1920.

DEAL LICENSEE FINED.

At the Deal Petty Sessions on Thursday Mrs. Francis Spicer, licensee of the "Locomotive Inn," West Street, was fined £2 on a charge of unlawfully supplying during prohibited hours a bottle of whiskey for consumption off the premises contrary to article 3(a) of the regulations of the Liquor Control Board, on Sunday, the 14th March. A similar charge with respect to beer was dismissed, as the Bench were satisfied, after a good deal of argument and evidence, that the transaction took place during lawful hours. Mr. Rutley Mowll appeared for Mrs. Spicer. Richard William Riley was summoned for unlawfully obtaining whiskey. Mr. J. Drury, of Ramsgate, appeared for the defendant, who said that his only reason for buying the whiskey was for his aunt, who was ill.

The Bench imposed a fine of 7s.6d.
