Only just found mention of this in the Deal, Walmer, and Sandwich Mercury, 13 January, 1872, when it was stated that the "Malt Shovel," Sandwich, had changed licensee from George Friar to William Crothall.

I am hoping to find further reference to this pub as I continue the research.

From the Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, Saturday, 19 November, 1910.

EAST KENT LICENSING COMMITTEE. SUPPLEMENTAL MEETING.

The "Malt Shovel," Delph Street, Sandwich, beer-house, owners the East Kent Brewery Co., Ltd., Sandwich; tenant Mr. Horace Price. Total amount £108, divided, owners £103, tenant £3.

From an email received, 10 March 2025.

Dear Sir,

On researching my family tree I find that Joseph Albert Bourner was Innkeeper at the Malt Shovel in 1901, according to his probate information.

I am not sure when he took over the licence, but he died there age 43.

He died on 20 July 1901. I note on that 1901 census (31 March 1901) that he lived in Delf Street, Sandwich and was a Brewer’s Labourer.

I imagine that means he and his family might have lived there but that he didn’t hold the licence.

Kind regards,

Deborah Howdle-Smith.
