Notes of 1916

Kent & Sussex Courier 18 February 1916.

SEVENOAKS BREWSTER SESSIONS.

The annual licensing meeting for the Sevenoaks Division was held on Friday, Supt. Fowle stated that the whole of the licensed houses had been well conducted. The number of persons proceeded against for drunkenness showed a decrease of 27 this year.

The Chairman said it was a very satisfactory report, especially with the reduction of cases among non-residents. It was an indication that though they had a large body of soldiers in the district, it had not led to any increase of drunkenness.

With regard to the renewal of licenses, the Bench had decided to renew them all, with the exception of the "Horns" and the "Crown" at Otford, and the "Broom Inn," Seal Chart. These would be put back till the adjourned licensing meeting, which would be held on March 10th.

The Bench passed plans for the re-building of the "Amhurst Arms" Riverhead.

East Kent Gazette, Saturday 28 October 1916.

A Newington Publican.

A licensed victualler (38), married, with two children, of Newington, applied for renewal of a temporary certificate. He had been in business for 11 years. His wife was not able to attend to the business at present, but when she was able to do so he was willing to do munitions work. If he could get home during the week to do the cellar work, and be at home for the weekend, he thought he could manage.

Three-months temporary exemption was granted.
