Police confiscate alcohol from nuisance drinkers.

REGULAR drinkers who frequent Dover town centre had their alcohol confiscated this week, and one was given an on-the-spot fine.

The police action was part of a campaign to tackle the nuisance caused by drinkers in various parts of the town, including Pencester Gardens, Maison Dieu Gardens, and the Market Square.

On Tuesday, a number of people had drink taken from them as officers responded to complaints about their behaviour.

After ignoring two previous warnings, one man was given a £50 fine.

In February a new measure was introduced to control the consumption of alcohol in public places in the district.

Any person who refuses to stop drinking after being told to stop by a police constable, commits an offence which could result in them being arrested.

Bid to cut under-age drinking.

PARENTS should take more responsibility for their children's behaviour.

That's the view of Sgt Mark Weller who is among the police officers spearheading a campaign to cut down on under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour in the Dover area.

Teenagers arrested for being drunk could end up in the cells with their parents being called in to collect them.

Officers are launching Operation Langley following a spate of incidents in the past few weeks in which large quantities of alcohol have been seized from under-age drinkers, some as young as 13.

PC Matt Hawkes PC Matt Hawkes is among the officers who have been giving the youngsters some "firm but friendly advice" and hoping they will understand the kind of trouble they are likely to get into if they drink under-age.

"But that's the end of the warnings," he said. "Now we will be taking enforcement action."

The officers are also targeting youngsters who are abusive and cause criminal damage, those taking drugs, and young nuisance motorists who rev up their cars, do wheel spins and speed around.

Sgt Weller said there would be zero tolerance with youngsters who were found to be drunk.

"Parents must take some responsibility for their kids and what they are doing. Some of the youngsters we have stopped tell us the alcohol they are drinking has been given to them by their parents."

Special constables will also be involved in the operation which will run during the coming weeks.

Anyone with Information which could help the officers Is asked to contact the police on 01304 218000.
