(Name to)

35 York Street

Ramsgate

This changed name to the "York Tavern" some time between 1867 and 1874. I believe this was also known as the "Vine" at some time of its existence, but whether before of after the "Angel Inn" at present I do not know.

SANDWICH PETTY SESSIONS.

Jane Julia Barnicle again applied for a transfer of the license of the "Angel Inn," Ramsgate, which was granted.

NISI PRIUS COURT. (Before Mr. Justice Willes).

CLARENCE HOTEL COMPANY (LIMITED) V. GOODE.

This was an action to recover £239 9s. 5d. from the defendant, as the holder of 30 shares in the above company. The Hon. G. Denman, Q.C., and Mr. Francis were for the plaintiffs, and Mr. Day for the defendant.

The company, it seemed, was established under the Limited Liability Act, for the erection of a large hotel at Dover; and in June, 1863, the defendant, who lives in Lower Belgrave-street, London, requested a Mr. Law, one of the directors, to obtain for him an allotment of 30 shares. This accordingly was done, and the defendant signed the usual formal application, paying the deposit of 10s. per share; and by the “articles of association” he hereby became liable for the further payment of 30s. per share on allotment. This would amount to £45; and the remainder of the claim was in respect of three calls of £2 per share subsequently made.

For the defence, it was urged that two or three days after defendant had made application for shares, he went again to the office of the company, and said he should like to withdraw the application. The secretary, according to defendant's statement, said he would bring it be fore the directors; and the simple question in the case was whether the company had discharged him from his obligation.

The jury at once returned a verdict for plaintiffs, for the amount claimed.

From the Southeastern Gazette, 31 July 1866.

Alleged Watch Stealing.

At the same sittings, Thomas Miles was charged with stealing the watch of Ben Caunt, (son of the renowned prize-fighter) on the 23rd inst. It appeared from the evidence that Caunt, who is staying at the “Angel Tavern,” went home with the prisoner, as did also a guard on the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, Prisoner accompanied Caunt into his bed room. Caunt got into bed, leaving his watch value £18, in his coat pocket. On searching for it presently he missed it, and it was afterwards found on the floor under the prisoner’s bed in a separate room. The prisoner was remanded.
