This pub was built around 1710, as a doctor’s home and medical practice for Dr. Whirfeld then the Wilks family. Dr Wilks of the Wilks Hall fame was born there 29th August 1840. After this it was sold and became the "Fernley" temperance hotel serving non alcolholic beverages for commercial travellers.

In 1895 was again sold and it became the "County Hotel," and George Edward Bozon became the owner and licensee.

It must have gone under refurbishment in 1982 as it had a reopening in August 1982.

It was bought by Wetherspoons pub, in April 1998 and is still (2019) owned by them.
