Mentioned as the "Donkey's Chump" in 1850, by 1865 it had changed name to the "Leopard Inn," and listed as the "Leopard's Head" in 1889. However, I have now found reference to a "Leopard's Head" addressed at North Lane in 1824, but believe this is the same and that perhaps the "Donkey's Chump" was a locals name for the pub. A Chump meaning a short, thick lump of wood chopped or sawn off from timber, or in this case probably head.

I believe the Donkey's Chump, was originally terraced housing, with 63/64 being merged to form a larger pub. As part of the post-war rebuild, part of the site of the bombed-out next-door house was taken over and incorporated within the new "Leopard's Head" building.
