JOHN CARTHEW

HAVING taken the "WALMER CASTLE INN," in MARGATE, respectfully begs to announce to his Friends, the Inhabitants and Visitors of Margate and the Isle of Thanet, that it is his intention to continue to conduct the above old Establishment on the same liberal terms as his respected Predecessor, Mr. John Brooke, by selling at moderate prices, none but Genuine Spirits and Wines of the best Vintages.

LICENSES.

Wednesday last was the annual licensing day, on which occasion J. C. Ottaway, Esq., the Mayor of Dover, and T. Worsfold and S. Finnis, Esq., justices of Dover, were on the Bench, in addition to the local magistrates. The whole of the old licenses were renewed without objection.

Mr. Towne applied for a new license on behalf of Mr. Philpott, of Mill-lane, which was refused. Mr. Harvey Boys applied on behalf of Mr. Macnally, of the "Walmer Castle." He stated that Margate, with a population of 9,000, had 58 public-houses, 1 to every 150 persons; Ramsgate, with a population of 12,600, had 56 public-houses, 1 to 233; Dover, with a population of 27,000, had 170 public-house, 1 to 160. The Bench refused to grant the required license.
