Deal

Queen Adelaide 1903

Above photo circa 1903, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. It is suggested that this is actually Adelaide House on Beach Street, Deal. But were there houses on the right of the road by the sea?

Adelaide House 1900

Above postcard, circa 1900, kindly supplied by Richard Fardon, again showing Adelaide House in Deal, NOT the "Queen Adelaide."

Queen Adelaide, Walmer 1902

The above photograph, kindly supplied by Neil Castle, shows the pub in 1902. He says the delivery horse cart in front is my great grand uncle Christopher Terry and Co. Photo was provided to me by Terry Deal.

Adelaide House 2023 Walmer

Above Google image, April 2023, showing what is now called Alelaide House.

Named after the wife of King William IV and to whom the Capital City of South Australia is also named. It is said she was in Deal in 1818 when on her way to see her future husband, then the Duke of Clarence.

Locally this was known as "The Hut," for some reason.

Queen Alelaide

Picture above, shows a portrait of Queen Adelaide.

This pub has been referred to as simply the "Adelaide" in many of the directories and census.

The pub unfortunately closed on 8 March 1913. At its close it was being supplied by Phillips of Malling. It is now a private house and listed building.

From the Kentish Gazette, 17 October 1843.

DEATH.

Oct. 10, at Walmer, at an advanced age, Mrs. Knott, landlady of the "Adelaide" public house.

Kentish Gazette, 8 October 1850.

DEATH.

Knight:— Oct 11, at Walmer, Mrs. Elizabeth Knight, wife of James Knight, of the "Adelaide Inn," Upper Walmer.
