I have only recently added Folkestone to this site. The information gathered so far is from "More Tales from the Tap Room" by Martin Easdown and Eamonn Rooney.

According to Donald Stuart in his book "Old Kent Inns" this pub later became the "Clarendon" but the address doesn't appear to tally.

From an email received 9 September, 2014.

Hi,

We live in this property and believe it stopped being a pub in about 1840.

It's been very difficult to find out any real info about it, but it certainly wasn't The "Clarendon." We do have a neighbour who says her father was stationed at the Shorncliffe Barracks and said he drank here, but I think he might have been thinking of the Clarendon as I can find no proof that it was a pub in the 20th century.

We still have the original sink in the basement and a trap door in our living room. Attached is a picture of what it looks like now. There is a photo of the owners of the house in about 1901 and it definitely was a private home then.

The Sandgate Society (in the old fire station, Sandgate High Street) has some of the old pub signs from the village and there is one for the "Old Rose Tavern" but, again, I believe this was a different pub.

If I discover any other info about it, I'll let you know.

Regards,

Allison Du Feu.
