Snargate Street

Dover

The Dover and Deal Directory and Guide of 1792 mentions a Charles Marieé as Innkeeper at the "Royal Hotel, and a Marieé is also mentioned as being there in 1863 as well when mention is found regarding his death. The venue is listed as in Snargate Street but seemed to end with the death of the Proprietor, Marieé, about 1863. I believe there must have been more than one licensee with that name. It then continued as a coach office.

Further information received from Jeff Howe tells me that the premises was insured by the Sun Fire Office as early as 1788 and 1789.

Wednesday, August 19, 1778.

I didn't arrive in Dover until 4:00 a.m.

In that wretched place, a package containing a gray hat, six pairs of white silk stockings, and a mirror was stolen from me.

In Dover, I stayed at Mr. Mariee's Royal Hotel, because I had been told that the stagecoach by which I had sent my trunk always unloaded there, but it didn't at all. It was also at the Ship Inn. After a very bad night's sleep, I went to the Ship Inn in the morning, where the accommodations are very comfortable.

We couldn't leave that day, so in the afternoon I went to see the race, which was halfway to Canterbury.
