St. Lawrence
Post Office Directory 1874 gives reference to a "Shakespear"
spelt without an "e" at the end, but that could be a misprint, at St. Lawrence.
I also have another reference to a "Shakespeare
Tavern" addressed at Addington Street, Margate.
From the Kentish Gazette, 29 August 1848.
A few nights ago the "Shakespear Tavern" was entered and a great
deal of plate and spirits carried off. These depredations have
become so frequent that the inhabitants of St. Lawrence parish have
formed themselves into a society, to offer rewards for the detection
of offenders, and employ watchmen over the property of the
subscribers.

Kentish Gazette, 2 December 1851.
INQUEST. Sudden Death.
An inqust was held on Saturday evening last, at the "Shakespeare
Hotel," St. Lawrence, in the Isle of Thanet, by Mr. T. T. Delasaux,
one of the coroners for East Kent, on the body of Mr. Joseph Green
Walford, formerly solicitor to the Board of Customs, who died at the
Ramsgate station that morning as he was about proceeding, with Mrs.
Wallord and some members of his family, by the morning train to
Walmer.
The evidence of the company’s servants showed that the
unfortunate gentleman arrived at the station apparently in good
health, but that directly afterwards he fell on the floor of the
pay-office, and when carried into the waiting room immediately
breathed his last. Medical assistance was promptly procured, but all
human aid was unavailing.
The verdict of the jury was "Natural
death." The deceased was in the 73rd year of his age. |
