HYTHE. Drunk and Quarrelsome.
At the Magistrates Clerk’s Office, Hythe, on Saturday (before P.
Monypenny, Esq. (Mayor), and Wm. Rayner, Esq.), Alexander Todd, a
tramp, was brought up in custody, charged with being drunk and
quarrelsome, in the "Sportsman's Inn," and refusing to leave the
house when requested by the landlord, Mr. W. Wiles.
It appeared that about 5 o’clock on the evening of the 2nd inst.,
the prisoner went into the "Sportsman’s Inn," and sat down saying
that he was very tired, as he had walked a good way. Mr. Wiles drew
him a pint of beer, and he sat there until 11 o’clock, when as it
was closing time, Mr. Wiles asked him to leave. He with an oath
refused to do so, and got up to strike him at the same time, using
very bad language. He was also very abusive and violent. The police
were sent for, and Superintendent Friend went in and found the
prisoner asleep on a seat. He roused him up and told him he must
leave the house. The prisoner then asked who he was, and he told him
the superintendent, and showed him his truncheon. He told the
superintendent that if he came near him he would knock him down.
Friend tried to persuade him to go, and he then struck at him and
knocked his hat off. The superintendent then procured the assistance
of other persons, and after some little trouble he ultimately
succeeded in locking him up.
The Magistrates fined him 10s. and 4s. 6d. costs, and in default
committed him for 14 days.
